Topics and tags on Rungway help to categorise and link related discussions and pulses to one another.
About topics and tags
The feed is the life and soul of Rungway and its bursting with great advice and experiences. Browsing with topics or tags and by combining with search and filters means you can see posts about the subjects that are most relevant to you in just a few clicks.
Topics
Think of topics generally as high-level subjects that group similar posts together, like "Health" or "Culture".
Being able to see all posts on a certain topic makes it incredibly useful to see what types of conversations are happening around the organisation. Search and filters make it even easier to narrow down exactly the types of conversations you want to see and get involved in them yourself.
When you post, add up to 3 topics on a new discussion or Pulse and it will be found in each of those topic feeds when someone browses or searches there. Additionally, Rungway will analyse posts to see if more appropriate topics are needed and add them automatically just to ensure that more of the right people see your post.
Tags
Tags allow you to be more granular when adding context to your posts in order to link discussions and Pulses more directly. They are used to describe the exact issue(s) that the post is talking about, like "Mental Health", "Skills" or "Training" and could even be used when there's a particular subject that's ‘trending’ at the time eg: "Furlough" or "Covid".
Similarly with topics, using tags to browse means you can really quickly see all the conversations that are happening about a specific subject as well as using search and filter to be even more focused.
You'll notice, tags don't have a fixed location on the feed so the way to browse them is slightly different to topics. Tags only appear on cards they have been applied to so when you see a discussion or Pulse you're particularly interested in, just click the tag to find a new feed containing all posts with that tag.
You can add up to 10 tags for each new discussion or Pulse which lets you cover off a lot more detail.
👉🏻 Replies are automatically allocated the same topics and tags as the discussion so will appear alongside the discussion in a topic or tag feed
👉🏻 Rungway will automatically assign additional relevant topics where needed once your post is live. This is to ensure that your post reaches as many Rungway members as possible to help you get the best replies. Your original topics will always remain in this case.
How to browse Rungway using topics and tags
To start with, it’s helpful to think of topic and tag pages as independent feeds.
While your home feed still contains every post on Rungway, you now also have access to individual "Topic feeds". These are essentially filtered versions of the main feed, whether that is by a topic eg: “Culture” or a tag eg: “Remote working". Jumping between the feeds gives you quick access to content which has been filtered for you by Rungway. Also remember, each feed has its own search and filter options too which will look through posts in that feed alone, allowing you to dive down even further to focus on exactly what you’re looking for.
For example, searching for the term ‘manager’ when you’re looking at the topic feed ‘culture’ with only ‘discussions’ filtered on will return search results for “Discussions assigned to the culture topic containing the term manager”.

How to add topics and tags to your post
When you’re considering which topics and tags to add to your discussion or Pulse it’s helpful to be thinking about two things:
The types of people you would want to reply to your post.
The types of posts that you want your content to be seen with.
To add topics and tags to your discussion on web:
Click Start a Post/Discussion
(If you are a Pulse creator you’ll need to select Discussion next)
Select your appearance and compose your discussion as normal
Select up to three topics and ten tags from the right hand panel (If you need to, use the tag search to find an appropriate tag)
When you’re happy click ‘Post as…’
You’ll see a confirmation screen to show that your discussion is live with reference to the topics and tags that you chose. You can click one of the topics to jump straight into that topic to see your post
To add topics and tags to your discussion on mobile:
Tap the start a post button
Choose your appearance
Compose your discussion
Select up to three topics. Tap Skip if you don’t want to add topics or tags
Tap ‘Add tags’ in the bottom left corner. Use the search to find a specific tag
Tap done to return to the topic page
Tap Review
You’ll be able to check the content one last time and then tap ‘Post as…’ to publish the discussion
When adding topics and tags to a Pulse it’s slightly different. You only have the option to add them if you’re posting your Pulse to the feed. If you want to share the Pulse with a link to your team you don’t have the option to add them.
To add topics and tags to your Pulse on web:
Click Start a Post
Choose the type of Pulse you want, single or multiple question
Compose your Pulse in the normal way and when you’re happy click ‘Done’
When choosing to post the Pulse to the feed you’ll see the option to add up to 3 topics and 10 tags (with the ability to search through tags) in a similar way to a discussion
Click ‘Publish’ to post your Pulse to the feed
Why use topics and tags?
There are several benefits to using topics and tags on Rungway:
Topics and tags offer a new way to group content away from the main feed. As a result, people in your organisation who are in the best position to answer questions on particular subjects can quickly see what posts are currently in need of attention in their specialism. This means, not only do questions and issues get seen and answered by the right people, but also it should speed up the time it takes to get a response too.
Using topics and tags to browse the feed gives you a much quicker way to dive into conversations that you care about that are particularly relevant to you or perhaps something that is happening right now and you want to see the latest updates 'in the moment'.
Browsing the Rungway using topics or tags means you can discover the types of things that are happening without knowing what to search for. Up until now, it's only been easy to find posts if you know exactly what to look for, now you can use topics as a starting point to take you on a journey - deeper into the culture of your organisation.
Topics and Tags can also be used to introduce a new conversation subject to the organisation. For example, if there's a big campaign happening on sustainability, adding a new topic can help gather all the posts in one place where you can invite others to join in.
Tips on how to use topics and tags effectively:
When thinking about which topics or tags to use, be mindful of the type of person in the organisation you want to hear from first. Using the right topics will help target the post to most appropriate people. Use tags to be even more specific.
Be thoughtful about the number of topics and tags you apply to your post. Too few and it may not be seen by enough people, too many and the advice you receive may not be targeted enough. We recommend using 2-3 topics and 3-5 tags.
When browsing content for yourself, topics and tags are just one way to find the most relevant posts. Remember to make use of search and filters to get more granular.
